Important Facts and Notes of Macbeth

4.  Setting (time) : The Middle Ages, specifically the eleventh century

5. Setting (place) :
a) Northern Scotland:
King Duncan’s castle at Forres
Macbeth’s castle on Dunsinane Hill in the county of Inverness

6.  Subplots : No subplots
7. Three Witches   : Shakespeare mentions them as “the weird sisters”  derived from the Anglo- Saxon word wyrd, meaning fate.
8. 4th or 5th  Witch: Hecate, Mistress of the witches' charms and queen of Hades. She is the fourth witch in the play (or the fifth for those who believe Lady Macbeth, in view of her invocations of evil, is a witch.)
9.  The witches  recite a paradox that foreshadows their role to play and the events in the play:
“Fair is foul, and foul is fair” (1.1.14)
10. After hearing the will of the King for the throne to his son, Macbeth feels the desire of throne inside him:
"Stars hide your fires,
Let not light see my black and deep desires." (1.4.60-61)
11. Lady Macbeth, partner of Macbeth in committing the killing, wishes to leave her womanly tenderness to perform the heinous deed:
"Come to my woman's breasts,
And take my milk for gall, you murdering ministers" (1.5)
12. Even,  Lady Macbeth plays the role of chief advisor of Macbeth. She advises her husband to:
"look like the innocent flower,
But be the serpent under ’t." (1.5)
13. Macbeth  hesitates to continue the plan to kill the King:
"We will proceed no further in this business" (1.7)
14. Lady Macbeth scolds Macbeth in a most repulsive way:
"I would, while it was smiling in my face,
Have pluck’d my nipple from his boneless gums,
And dash’d the brains out, had I so sworn as you
Have done to this.” (1.7.62-67)
