Wordsworth’s Theory of Poetry : The Poet and Poetic Process

Wordsworth’s conception of a poet is an important part of his theory of poetry presented in the Preface to Lyrical Ballads. In the preface, Wordsworth discusses the definition, qualities and function of a poet. Wordsworth defines a poet in the following lines: He is a man speaking to men: a man, it is true, endowed with more lively sensibility, more enthusiasm and tenderness, who has a greater knowledge of human nature, and a more comprehensive soul, than are supposed to common among mankind. Oedipus as a tragic hero

Oedipus, the hero in the play ‘King Oedipus’, is the most distressed, pathetic and touching tragic hero of Sophocles of Greek tragedy and of world tragedy as well . Though he is a man of good virtues, dignity, high birth and position, he suffers the highest mental and physical suffering. Now we will consider Oedipus to be a tragic hero, especially according to Aristotle’s criteria. According to Aristotle, a tragic hero possesses high birth and high social standing . In the case of Oedipus, we see that Oedipus is born of Lauis , the king, and Jocasta , the queen; he is brought up by Polybus , the king of Corinth , and Merope , the queen later on; he becomes a king and marr ie s a queen, and begets children too. The citizens of Thebes consider him as their father and saviour. A tragic hero is a man of excellent qualities , and good in his character, behaviour and action. Merits and demerits of Shakespeare in Johnson's Preface to Shakespeare

Shakespeare is such a poet and dramatist of the world who has been edited and criticized by hundreds of editors and critics Dr. Samuel Johnson is one of them. But among the literary criticisms about Shakespeare, ‘‘ Johnson ’ s edition was notable chiefly for its sensible interpretation ’ s and critical evaluations of Shakespeare as a literary artist. ’’ As a true critic in his Preface to Shakespeare, Johnson has pointed out Shakespeare’ s merits or excellences as well as demerits. Let us now discuss Shakespeare’ s merits as stated by Johnson. Shakespeare’ s greatness lies in the fact that he is ‘‘ the poet of nature ’’ .
